Wimbledon hosts the third Grand Slam of the season. The quarterfinals get underway this Wednesday with all the main contenders for the Wimbledon title still in the competition. Join us while we look at the players to keep an eye on in the next rounds and their chances to lift the trophy.
Roger Federer is in London to campaign for a record 9th Wimbledon trophy and 21st Grand Slam title. Once again, the 36-year-old is the No.1 seed and the main contender to lift the trophy at the All England Club. Federer has now won 32 consecutive sets at Wimbledon after a 6-0, 7-5, 6-4 win over Adrian Mannarino. Adding to this, the Swiss maestro has yet to drop his serve in this tournament and held serve 81 times in a row.
Federer will face Kevin Anderson in the quarterfinals. Despite Anderson’s undeniable quality, the South-African failed to win a single set in all their previous four official encounters on the ATP World Tour. The sportsbooks are well aware of Roger’s dominance, with Pinnacle offering only 1.07 for the Swiss to win the match. If Federer wins this match, he will have to deal with another big server in the semifinals. The No.1 seed will meet the winner of the match between Milos Raonic and John Isner.
Raonic became the first Canadian man to reach a Grand Slam final after an epic five-set win over Federer in the 2016 Wimbledon semi-finals. On the other hand, Isner won his most recent encounter against the Swiss at the Rolex Paris Masters in 2015. Nevertheless, neither should be able to defeat Roger on this event.
Looking now at the bottom half of the draw, former champions Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are the main threats on Federer’s path. Djokovic is the slight favorite to reach the final at 2.37 with Ladbrokes while Betfair offers 2.50 for the Spaniard to make his first appearance in the championship match since 2011. Despite Nadal’s recent victory over the Serbian in Rome, the fast court conditions at the All England Club should benefit Djokovic. For that reason, betting on Novak to reach the final at 2.37 at Coral is a very interesting approach for this tournament.
As mentioned above, Federer is the main contender to win the title with Coral offering only 1.80 on his outright. Even though we agree with Roger’s favoritism, the current price is too low for us to get involved. On the other hand, William Hill offers a very interesting price for Novak to win his fourth Wimbledon title at 5.50. For that reason, Djokovic is the player to keep an eye on in the next couple of days at the All England Club.
