Home I Daily Fantasy Sports I Underrated and Overvalued NFL Fantasy Players
August is the time to make up your mind about what NFL players will you pick for your fantasy experience, whether it be in a local club fantasy league or a series of DFS contests. We are here to help you to not fall for the massive hype and avoid an overvalued player who would most probably disappoint, and also point out some underrated guys who usually go under the radar of your DFS opponents.
Say you’ve got the last pick in your local club fantasy league. Or maybe you’ve set your priorities to draft running backs in the first round (which is a good approach by the way). You reach the moment you have to pick a QB, look around and see no Bradys, Aarons or Drew Breeses. How do you keep your team value up? Pick Tyrod Taylor!
The Buffalo Bills QB is the only NFL player with at least 3000 passing and 550 rushing yards in the past two seasons of the league. During the 2017 NFL Season Tyrod Taylor ranked 68th overall in the NFL fantasy leaderboard. That’s better than Derek Carr, Russell Wilson, Marcus Mariota, and even Ben Roethlisberger.
Tyrod’s stable performance and his team not being among the top performers, makes him one of the best off-the-spotlight DFS deals for season 2017.
Hardcore DFS players already know this one but it’s still worth mentioning. Don’t draft Big Ben unless you are a big Steelers fan and don’t care much about your DFS rankings. During his 13-year NFL career so far, Ben has managed to play all 16 games of the season just 3 times. Additionally, don’t forget that most of the Steelers’ plays involve running as the safe choice.
In case you love this NFL superstar, or you are a die-hard Steelers fan, you can pick Big Ben for the first few games but consider having another QB as your main passer in the long term…one that’s not Landry Jones.
The Browns’ offseason was a blast. It marked the beginning of the team’s rise above the dusty bottom of the NFL rankings. And it is not only about grabbing the best-rated rookie Myles Garrett. Now that the 2017 NFL Draft and the free agency period are over, the Browns probably have the best offensive line in the league. And I put the word “probably” only to avoid offending the Cowboys’ fans.
With guys like Joel Bitonio, Kevin Zeitler, J.C. Tretter, and Joe Thomas leading the offensive line and the lack of an outstanding QB, you can expect the team from Cleveland to rely more on run plays than throwing the ball. And who’s their main RB? Isaiah Crowell. Given the fact his team finished last in 2016, the 24-year-old scored very well fantasy-wise. Crowell ranked 14th among the 2017 running backs with 952 yards.

Ameer Abdullah is a fan favorite, which makes him an overvalued fantasy pick every season. This is due to his remarkable 45-yard gain against the Jets in the 2015 preseason game. Since then fans (and coaches) put a lot of trust in the RB from Alabama, but he doesn’t seem to justify it. Abdullah ranked 136th in 2015 season and even worse in 2016. Last season he was ranked 309th in terms of fantasy points.
What is more, Ameer Abdullah is not expected to see many plays in 2017, considering RB Zach Zenner and RB Theo Riddick are healthy.
The wide receiver with the highest yardage for season 2016 was not Antonio Brown, Odell Beckham Jr., or even Julio Jones. It was the Indianapolis Colts’ Eugene Marquis Hilton, called “T.Y.”, also known as “The Ghost”. Hilton’s 91 catches, 1448 passing yards and 182.8 fantasy points last season has put him at rank 18 overall, 5th among the wide receivers. Ironically, he ranked ahead of his QB Andrew Luck (27th). The Colts’ tandem is expected to generate a lot of completions in 2017 as well.
Somehow Hilton usually goes under the radar of most fantasy players. So don’t hesitate to pick him as a fresh addition to your WR lineup.
Edelman is a real superstar and his out-of-this-world shoestring catch during Super Bowl 51 was crucial to the Patriots winning the 2017 title. He is a man of the big plays, but his yardage is not as consistent as his fan rating. Edelman is the definition of an overvalued player.
During 2017 we expect a healthy Rob Gronkowski and a hungry for deep pass catches Brandin Cooks to lead the Patriots’ rankings in terms of offensive fantasy points.
