The Final Test, 1953

The Final Test is a British cricket film directed by Anthony Asquith. The movie was aired for the first time in 1953 and was one of the first cricket films ever. The main character of this cricket movie, Sam Palmer is an elderly cricketer who is about to play his final match for England.

 

 

The film is a great mixture of a plot that is built around cricket and its rules in general and also contains documentary footage of actual cricket matches. Palmer wants his son Reggie to attend his final match for his country but Reggie is hesitating because he got the unique chance to meet one of the leading poets, Alexander Whitehead.

 

 

The Final Test was critically acclaimed and is considered to be a simple, yet entertaining movie. The audience also liked the movie and it ended up even filling London’s huge Odeon, Leicester Square.

Wondrous Oblivion, 2003

Wondrous Oblivion is a British cricket film from 2003 and was produced by Jonny Persey. The movie is set in 1960 however and concerns the friendship between a young boy and his neighbors. David Wiseman is the main character and shares a love for the game of cricket with his friends who are West Indian immigrants in England.

 

 

David himself is actually terrible at playing cricket but Dennis, the father of the Jamaican family, teaches him to play. The movie is rated 7/10 on IMDb which is really good. Unlike him though, his neighborhood is not as willing to tolerate new arrivals.

Victory, 2009

Victory is the first Indian film on our list. Unlike the other two just mentioned cricket movies, it’s a pure cricket movie. It tells the story of a cricketer who is in bad shape but manages to overcome the odds to achieve his dream. Dr. Vijay Shekhawat is the main character in this movie and his dream of becoming a part of the Indian cricket team.

 

 

Vijay eventually makes it into his team but struggles later on and even loses his spot on the team. Victory displays how the media can influence the career of a cricketer and that things can turn around really quickly in sports and in life in general. Nevertheless, Vijay does not give up and makes it to the team once again, despite some private problems such as a serious injury and his difficult relationship with his childhood friend.

Fire in Babylon, 2010

Fire in Babylon is the only documentary film about cricket on our list. It tells the story of the record-breaking West Indies cricket team of the 1970s and 1980s which broke multiple records at that time. While the West Indies were playing cricket for multiple years, these decades were their strongest era by a fair margin. Fire in Babylon does not only focus on cricket though. It also discusses the cultural and political difficulties in the Caribbean nations playing under the common banner of the West Indies.

 

 

The movie was released in 2010 and there are numerous contributions by some of the finest cricketers of that era. Fire in Babylon masterfully manages to tell the story of the growth of Caribbean cricket and how the team became the world’s powerhouse in the 1970s. It was also nominated for three awards and therefore certainly a highly recommended cricket movie for both cricket fans and movie fans in general.

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, 2001

The final movie on our list of the best cricket movies is the Indian-made Lagaan. This Bollywood film was nominated as the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars in 2002 which basically speaks for itself. Lagaan is a fantastic cricket movie and tells the story of peasants in an Indian village.

 

 

In order to fight against the harsh taxes by the British empire, the village challenges their rulers to a cricket match. The film is set in the 1890s and won several Indian film awards and Time magazine included it in its list of the top-25 all-time sports movies.
