About Thomas Lord

Thomas Lord was born on November 23rd, 1755 and was a professional cricketer from England. He played first-class cricket from 1787 until 1802 and played a majority of his matches for Middlesex and Marylebone Cricket Club.

 

 

Lord is also the founder of Lord’s Cricket Ground which is referred to as the “home of cricket”. He moved to London and became a bowler and the general attendant at the White Conduit Club in Islington.

Cricket Career & Cricket Grounds

Lord started playing cricket around 1780. However, his first recorded game took place on his own ground – the Lord’s Old Ground at the Dorset Square. The venue has been named after Lord.

Even though he has never been competing against world-class players during his career, many people refer to him as a very decent bowler. Thomas Lord played his first match for Middlesex and was approached by the leading members of the White Conduit Club in 1786. They wanted him to find a more private venue for their club and in 1787 he acquired seven acres off Dorset Square and established his first ground.

After the lease on his first ground ended in 1810, he obtained an eighty-years lease on two fields at North Bank, St John’s Wood. The second ground which would be referred to as Lord’s Middle Ground was built in 1809.

Thomas Lord opened his third ground in 1814. Even though the ground did not make enough money, a prominent MCC member bought him out, but the ground went on to bear his name.

Thomas Lord’s Cricket Ground

Lord’s is a cricket venue in St John’s Wood in London. It is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club, the England and Wales Cricket Board ECB, the European Cricket Council, and it was also the home of the International Cricket Council until 2005.

 

The venue has been established in 1814 and has a capacity of 30,000 people. It is owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club Lord’s today is not the original site anymore. The new ground is located 230m north-west of the site of the Middle Ground.

The current ground turned 200 years in 2014 and there was an anniversary event. On 5 July Sachin Tendulkar captained an MCC XI which played against a Rest of the World XI in a 50 overs match. Shane Warne captained the Rest of the World XI in that match.
