If you’ve ever wondered how eSports started, the answer is StarCraft. It is considered as the first eSports discipline in the world. Highly popular in Korea, this game has shown the world that it’s more than just a hobby.
It’s the passion of the fans and the love of thousands, even millions. StarCraft started a new era of competitive gaming. The original StarCraft game was released back in 1998. Its successor, StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, was created 12 years later in 2010.
StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty is a military science fiction real-time strategy video game developed and released by Blizzard Entertainment. The sequel of StarCraft is split into three installments. The first one is the base game with the subtitle Wings of Liberty. Second is an expansion pack, Heart of the Swarm, and the last is a stand-alone expansion pack called Legacy of the Void.
StarCraft 2 features the return of the three species – Terran, Protoss, and Zerg. The gameplay is split in different campaigns:
In the Terran campaign, there is an interactive version of the battlecruiser Hyperion, with Jim Raynor as a hard-drinking mercenary captain and the main character. The difference here is that the storyline is linear and though each play will vary, the end result remains consistent. The Wings of Liberty campaign contains a variety of missions with unique features, such as lava that floods the battlefield every five minutes, forcing the player to move their units to high ground before they’re destroyed. StarCraft 2’s campaign also has exclusive units that are only playable in the campaign, not available in multiplayer mode.
As we already mentioned, StarCraft laid the basis of the eSports competitive scene. Despite some setbacks, the StarCraft scene appeared to be comfortable and rose well into 2012 and 2013. Viewership numbers on major events wasn’t high but average and peak viewer counts continued climbing reliably. Total prize money awarded crested the $4 million dollar mark in 2012, which is something incredible. Nowadays, the SC II scene is not as big as League of Legends and Dota 2, but still, it’s followed by millions of fans over the globe.
Along with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, and League of Legends, Starcraft 2 is also one of the favorite eSports disciplines to all eSports sportsbooks. Most of them have weekly betting options related to StarCraft tournaments.
