There are two main competitions in rugby. One of them is the Rugby League, which is the focus of this guide. We are going to discuss the other competition, Rugby Union, in Part 2.
The Rugby League is quite similar to the Rugby Union. It is a full contact sport played by two teams and was first played in 1895. The main goal of the game is to score points by carrying the ball and touching it to the ground beyond the opposing team’s goal line. This is called a “try”.
The second way to score points is by kicking goals. After each try the scoring teams gets a free kick to try at goal. That will grant the team additional points.
The Rugby League is really popular in Northern England, certain parts of Australia, New Zealand, and the Southern regions of France. The are several professional leagues including the European Super League and the Australian National Rugby League, which are the most popular ones.
Rugby League is an international competition governed by the Rugby League International Federation.
Both competitions have similarities in terms of their origin, but there are also several differences.
Rugby was split into these two competitions way back in 1895 and soon after there were some rule modifications in the Rugby League.
In the Rugby League there are 13 active players per team and 10 substitutions, compared to 15 active players and 7 substitutions in the Rugby Union.
There is a tackle limit in the Rugby League and when the limit is reached, the opposing team gets possession of the ball. If the ball is out of play the opposing team gets a scrum. A scrum in the Rugby League consists of 6 people, whereas there 8 people in a Rugby Union scrum.
A try will earn a team 4 points, a conversion kick gets rewarded with 2 points, and a drop goal or field goal equals 1 point. A try in the Rugby Union on the other hand, is worth 5 points. A penalty kick or a drop goal is worth 3 points and a conversion kick will bring 2 points.
As you can see in general there will be more points scored in a regular Rugby Union match than in a regular Rugby League match. Therefore always make sure to be aware of which competition you have selected, especially when betting on over/under (points totals) markets.
Back in the day, both competitions were often divided along class lines. Working-class players just could not afford to spend their free time playing and were not able to train and play Rugby Union. That’s why most of them were playing the Rugby League.
It was a highly popular code in the working class. Rugby Union on the other hand was played in schools and universities, which led to the divide between the classes. Even today, you can witness the class divide in the different popularity of both competitions in England and across the globe.
As of today more than 70 nations play Rugby League. Currently, the strongest nations are Australia, England, and New Zealand.
The most popular rugby competition is the World Cup. It features 14 teams and the reigning champions come from Australia.
