Rugby betting is really popular in many countries, especially the United Kingdom. It is a traditional type of sport and draws the attention of a large amount of people. Here we will explain the most common rugby betting options.
There are many rugby betting options offered by a majority of sportsbooks. Rugby is also widely considered to be a relatively high scoring game, which is great for sports betting.
A Rugby Union match lasts 80 minutes split into two halves of 40 minutes each. Each team is made up of 15 players. In order to win a match, you have to score more points than your opponent. Points can be scored with tries (5 points), drop goals (3 points), penalty kicks (3 points), and conversions (2 points).
Tries are scored when a player manages to ground the ball in the opposition’s in-goal area. The player has to be in control of the ball when a try is scored.
Drop goals are scored when a player kicks the ball between the opposition’s goalposts. The ball has to touch the ground before it gets kicked and must pass above the crossbar to complete a drop goal.
Penalty kicks in rugby are the main disciplinary sanction. The team that suffered an infringement receives possession of the ball and may kick it towards touch. Alternatively, they are allowed to a place kick at goal or tab the ball with their foot and run it.
Just like in football, there are three potential outcomes for a rugby match. You can bet on a home team victory (1), a draw (X), or an away team victory (2). This is obviously one of the most popular betting markets and every sportsbook that accepts rugby bets will offer you this option.
Line betting is when a bookmaker is setting up a virtual handicap for a team. In rugby there are often times games with huge favorites or underdogs. Therefore the bookmakers decided to create what is called handicap betting. It allows them to virtually create advantages or disadvantages for both competing teams.
Let’s assume one side is considered to be 11.0 points better than the opponent, that means you can place a bet that this team is going to win the match by more than 11.0 points. But you can of course bet on the underdog as well which means that you are backing them to lose by no more than 11.0 points.
The handicap is added the the final result of the match and the team with more goals after the handicap is the winner.
If you place a handicap bet on the Saracens and the final result of that match is Saracens 15 – Glasgow Warriors 3 you would have won your bet, because even with 11 points added to the final score, the Glasgow Warriors would have only 13 points which is not enough to cover the handicap.
When placing a bet on points markets you don’t need to worry about the final result. You are just betting on a total amount of points. Most bookmakers provide over/under, team points, and team multi points betting options.
If you are betting on a total points betting markets you need to check the offered total points first. The bookie sets a total number of points and you have to decide if there will be more or less points than that amount.
Let’s say the total is set at 40.5 points. If you bet on the “over”, together both teams have to scored more than 41 points. Let’s assume Team A scores 21 points and Team B manages to score 20 points. That adds up to a total of 41 points which is obviously higher than 40. That means you would have won your bet.
All other points markets work similarly and are therefore easy to figure out.
