Home I eSports I eSports I Recap of Group Stages of Worlds
The 2017 Worlds has given the green light to start the Phase of Groups. The time has come to see those who have earned a spot to compete for the top tournament of League of Legends.
The first week ended leaving many with their mouths open, others with a broken heart (and empty pockets), and still more with a clear skepticism. Why? Well, let’s briefly review what happened in Wuhan.
We must start with the obvious. Korea was (again) the dominant region in this competition. The three representatives made their opponents look ridiculous. As expected, they are predicted to be the leaders of their groups at the end of the Phase.
On the other hand, some of the unbelieving supporters were surprised by the performance of North America on the first day. The three teams’ representatives, TSM, C9, and Immortals, finished the week with a score of 2-1. This gives them great chances to advance to the next stage if they keep up the pace during the second week.
The NA region showing a strong performance in the early days is excellent news for fans, since in previous editions of Worlds, their expectations fell in just a few games. The truth is that few expected Immortals would have these results. Since being a new team to international competition, it would be normal to give in to the pressure of the big stage. However, they have entered the arena with determination and strength.
Meanwhile, Europe is a question mark. With varied results among its three participants, the possibilities during the second week are endless and anything can happen.
G2 was presented as the European champion that makes strong decisions. However, they only have a single victory. Thankfully, it is enough for the team to stay in the race for the playoffs. The same cannot be said for Fnatic, because with a heart-breaking 0-3 in the first week, it is unlikely to see them in the next phase.
However, the team that was the biggest surprise is Misfits. Their line-up came with little support from the fans, as they positioned themselves in fourth place. A 2-1 result against TSM and Flash Wolves makes them a memorable team in this Worlds.
In Group A, SK Telecom T1 tops the group with three wins. Chasing them is the determined side of Cloud 9 with 1 loss and 2 wins.
In Group B, LONGZHU Gaming also can’t stop with a 3-0 score. They are being followed by a well-organized side of Immortals, who have only 1 loss in 3 games.
The same situation is in Group C with an unstoppable side of Royal Never Gave Up. While Samsung Galaxy is looking to going into playoffs with a 2-1 score.
Group D is where all the action is at the moment. Team We, Misfits Gaming, and TSM are currently tied with a score of 2-1, while Flash Wolves are dead last with a 0-3 score.
