See who are the best picks for NFL Week 1 and dominate the fantasy leaderboards!
It’s September and the NFL stage is set to receive yet another season of football spectacles. Once again the emotions will be storming not only on the fields but also in the homes and favorite venues of fantasy football fans.
A popular research suggests that if you manage to start your fantasy experience with 3 or 4 wins, chances are close to 90% that you will be heading to the fantasy league playoffs. Whether you are a traditional season fantasy enthusiast or a passionate Daily Fantasy player, this article will help you make the best choices or evaluate your selections for Week 1.
If you can afford to pick the heroes of the day, do it. All three are potential 4,000-yarders in season 2017. Brady has become the face of the NFL and American football in general. He’s on top of the world this year and will be chasing new records and another Super Bowl.
Some say Tom Brady will retire after one more successful season. Whether that is true or not, Week 1 is the time for individuals like the Patriots’ QB to step up and set a high standard for the rest of the league. Aaron Rodgers is Brady’s main competitor for the “best QB in the world” pub-discussion award, as he is equally good at throwing, running, and anticipating defense plans.
Third place on our NFL Week 1 QB Picks list is Matt Ryan, who has…well he has Julio Jones and an easy early schedule. Jokes aside, these are not his only weapons. Ryan has developed a lot through the years. He’s always been a good QB but now it seems his transformation into a great one is complete.
A huge part in Ryan’s development is due to Atlanta Falcons’ former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. He and his special program helped Matt Ryan escape the limits of throwing securely from the pocket. Now the Falcons’ QB doesn’t hesitate to deliver the ball under pressure.
Speaking of Kyle Shanahan, he now has other responsibilities, such as bringing the 49ers back to their former glory. During the offseason we saw huge steps towards a positive change in San Fransisco. One of them is the QB spot and there lies our Alternative NFL Week 1 QB Pick – Brian Hoyer. Shanahan and Hoyer were together in Cleveland back in 2014.
The QB has shown an improvement in his performance and in Week 1 he will be facing one of the weakest defenses from 2016 – the Panthers. Add his low DFS price and high availability in regular fantasy drafts, and you get a great tier-2 alternative.
The clear DFS leaders among the running backs are known to everyone – David Johnson and Le’Veon Bell, followed by LeSean McCoy. But we are not going to pick from them for NFL Week 1 due to the latest events in the NFL. Our choice is Ezekiel Elliott, who was off the “best RB” lists recently only because of the six-game suspension he’s dealing with.
Some guys even considered picking Cowboys’ second string RB Darren McFadden to continue taking advantage of the powerful Dallas offensive line. Eventually, Zeke’s ban will be lifted after the first game. That means Mr. Elliott, who was accused of engaging in physical violence with his ex-girlfriend, will be a starter in Week 1 against the Giants. Seems like we are going to wait for McFadden’s time in the spotlight for one more week.
Julio Jones was one of the reasons Atlanta celebrated a Super Bowl game last season. He holds the NFL record for most yards gained per game at an average of 96.3 yards. He is also one of only 6 players to surpass 300 receiving yards in a single game. Jones can catch anything and the recent growth in QB Matt Ryan’s awareness under pressure makes the duo a two-headed DFS-scoring machine. If this connection remains the same in 2017, we’ll definitely be seeing some new broken records.
The other top wide receivers this season are, of course, Antonio Brown and Odell Beckam Jr. The latter though, is injured and will most likely miss the first game. The Steelers on the other hand, have Le’Veon Bell as their main fantasy points generator and the renewed team of the Cleveland Browns to deal with. It is very risky to bet on QB Ben Roethlisberger to win the upcoming battle against DL Myles Garrett on Week 1. So we are going with the safe pick – the superstar from Atlanta facing the unpretentious Bears’ defense.
The rookie tight end drafted from Mississippi in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft is by all means the leader of this year’s TE class. In terms of speed and athleticism, Evan Engram performs incredibly well for his size. At 235 pounds, he ran the 40 in 4.42.
Engram completed six out of nine receptions for 75 yards in the preseason. Now that the Giants’ superstar Odell Beckam Jr. is injured, Engram would probably become the primary passing target for Eli Maning. The match in Week 1 is against the Dallas Cowboys, a team with great offense but questionable defensive guys. The Cowboys allowed the most receptions (119) and the most receiving yards (1,199) to tight ends in 2016.
Here’s a list of some injured or questionable players you may have otherwise wanted to pick for Week 1:
