The most discussed event of the preseason is underway – the 2017 NFL Draft. Its first round was loaded with emotions, unexpected choices, and last second trades. It took the teams nearly 8 hours to draft 6 defensive ends, 5 corner backs, 5 linebackers, 3 Qbs, 3 wide receivers, 3 safeties, 3 tight ends, 2 running backs, and 2 offensive tackles.
Contrary to the public perception about QB’s being the weakest link of this year’s Class, three teams traded to move up in the picks in order to get quarterbacks. Let’s take a look at the most interesting picks of the first round.
This one was expected. The Browns needed players all across the field and drafting the highest overall ranked player was their best bet. The 196 cm/120 kg Myles Garrett from Texas A&M would be a key factor in transforming the team from Cleveland into something more than an underdog. With an arm length of 35 inches and wingspan of almost 83, the 21-year-old DE is a force to be reckoned with.
North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is going to Chicago. He received the second pick of the first round and also earned a new nickname – “Mr. Biscuit”, as somebody mumbled his name. This guy is special – maybe not so much for the experts, but surely for the Chicago Bears who put a real effort to get their hands on him.
Ryan Pace, General Manager of the Bears, told the media they did what they had to do to get the second pick from the 49ers. On Friday night that meant giving away three picks in this draft (number 3, 67, and 111) plus a third-rounder from 2018. This move may seem foolish but is a “win-later” investment for the Bears.
The team will try to shape the talanted Trubisky into a real superstar, set to shine a few years down the road. For 2017, Mike Glennon remains the starter at the quarterback position in Chicago.
The Chiefs moved up 17 spots to get the youngster from Texas Tech. Patrick is probably the only prospect from this year’s class that actually looks his age – 21. Despite his ordinary look, Pat has an amazing arm.
He throws the ball at 96 km/h and has a college record of 734 passing yards in a single game. The selection of a QB for the Chiefs is reasonable, as their coach Andy Reid is very QB-friendly and the starter Alex Smith is soon to be retired.
The question is why they chose Mahomes over DeShaun Watson? We are about to see if that was the right decision in a few years.
As expected, DeShaun Watson was a first-rounder, but the third QB pick? That seems weird but in the NFL there is always a reason behind decisions.
Organizations spend a lot of time and resources researching prospects. Something in Watson’s personality or maybe the amount of interceptions he threw during his college career made the teams choose Trubisky and Mahomes over him, which is not that bad at all, as his counterpart from Notre Dame DeShone Kizer was left unselected in the first round.
Watson impressed everybody during the combine and had an impressive last year in college with the Clemson Tigers, winning the NCAA Championship.
One of the best defensive players, the DT from Alabama Jonathan Allen, somehow slipped threw the picks to reach number 17 where the Redskins got him. The team from Washington didn’t need the position but a lucky pick like that cannot be missed.
Jonathan Allen is big and tall but doesn’t have that much body fat, which makes him very quick and explosive. He will be very useful for the Redskins in terms of stopping runs – one of their weak points.
Tak McKinley of UCLA was picked by the Super Bowl LI runner-up Atlanta Falcons. A beast on the field, he showed his soft side on the red carpet during the Draft ceremony. After his name was announced, he went on stage holding a picture of his beloved grandmother and almost broke in tears.
Tak’s biggest achievement was the completion of a promise he made to his grandma – to reach the NFL. As emotions flew in, the young defensive end lost control of his tongue and dropped the f-word but later apologized.
