Home I Sports Betting I NBA Regular Season vs Playoffs
The NBA is broken up into two parts, the regular season and the playoffs. In this article I will be talking about everything you need to know about the regular season from opening night all the way to the last game. I will also take you through the entire playoff system and how everything works. The National Basketball League is one of the best leagues in the world, and the more you know about it the more you can appreciate it.
The NBA begins the last week of October every year. The regular season in the NBA is 82 games long. Each team plays 41 games at home and 41 game on the road. Every team will play each team in their division 4 times each. Each team plays 6 of the teams from the other 2 divisions in its conference 4 times, and the remaining 4 teams, 3 times. Finally, each team plays every team in the other conferences 2 times. Besides the NHL, the NBA is the only other league where every team plays each other.
Every February the NBA’s regular season comes to a halt to honor the leagues best players. The NBA has many activities that weekend which include a skills competition, three point competition, and a dunk contest. After those competitions the next day the NBA holds an All Star Game in a different city each year. That game is a celebration of all the most talented players for the fans. The two teams are broken up by conference, East vs West.
Soon after the All Star break, the NBA has a trade deadline. It is usually around the last week in February. Teams rush to acquire talent if they are doing good or they look to sell their assets if their season isn’t going as they planned. After the trade deadline is over, you can still sign and release players but you can not acquire players via trade. This is a very big day in the regular season.
The NBA playoffs begin in late April. Eight teams in each conference make the playoffs. The three division winners, along with the team with the next best record from the conference are given the top four seeds. The next four teams with the best record will round out the 8 teams.
The top 4 teams in each conference are given home court advantage. The breakdown of these series goes 2-2-1-1-1, meaning the higher seed will play games 1,2,5,7 at home. This is a huge advantage and the reason why the regular season is so important.
The playoffs are run off a tournament style format. Each playoff series is a best of seven series, where the first team to win four games advances into the next round. The team that loses is eliminated.
The NBA does not re-seed. The playoff bracket in each conference uses a scenario where the winner of the series of the 1st and 8th seeded teams playing the winner of the series of the 4th and 5th seeded teams, and the winner of the series of the 2nd and 7th seeded teams playing the winner of the series matching the 3rd and 6th seeded teams.
The breakdown of these series goes 2-2-1-1-1 like mentioned before.
When both conferences are down to 1 team, the NBA Finals will begin. This is the final round where winners of the Eastern Conference and Western Conference face off in a best of 7 series for the Championship. The winner of that series wins the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
