Hey all you professional basketball fans! It’s time for the new season so get ready to place your bets! Will the Warriors make it to the Finals for the 5th year in a row? Can they get the three-peat and take down their third consecutive NBA title? How will the Cavs compete without LeBron? Let’s take a look at what’s in store this season.
The Warriors and the Cavaliers have taken over the NBA. The last 4 years has been like Groundhog’s Day, with these same two teams making it to the Finals every season since 2014. Golden State has won 3 of those 4 championships.
The off season for Golden State included re-signing their star, Kevin Durant. He’ll be there for at least another year and another $61.5 million, but has the option to opt-out next summer and enter free agency for the third straight year. He’ll then be eligible for Bird rights, also known as the Larry Bird exception, which is where a team can sign without worrying about the salary cap after a player has been a free agent for 3 consecutive years for the same organization. Durant could then sign an MEGA deal of $220 million and 5 years. But, he’s keeping his options open.
“I could have easily signed a long-term deal but I just wanted to take it season by season and see where it takes me, and I think this year is going to be a fun, exciting year for us all. I’m looking forward to just focusing on that and we’ll see what happens after the year.”–Kevin Durant
The team also stunned the NBA when they signed the currently injured (achilles) DeMarcus Cousins to a one year, $5.3 million deal. Cousins will miss the start of the season but should be back on the court in time for the playoffs.
We all know the Cavs had to say goodbye to LeBron James this summer, and seeing him play for the LA Lakers could be tough for some die hard fans. Will the team be the same without him? Certainly not, but now with power forward Kevin Love the main star, they’ll give it a go. In what is clearly a rebuilding year, Cleveland has also signed Sam Dekker, Channing Frye, David Nwaba, and the number 8 draft pick, Collin Sexton.
With the presence of LeBron James, the Lakers could finally be elevated to a higher caliber team once again. It’s been 5 years since they’ve seen the post-season from the court, rather than the couch, and we can expect to see their games broadcast weekly. After winning only 35 games last season, reaching the playoffs would have been a stretch without James at the helm. Still, the Western Conference is a tough division to win and it won’t just be handed to the Lakers.
It’s always exciting to see the new kids on the block in their first season of the NBA. Who will be this year’s Rookie of the Year? Let’s take a look at the odds so far from BetOnline.
Luka Doncic, the teenaged EuroLeague superstar, was selected 3rd in the 2018 NBA Draft. He is currently the favorite to be the most successful rookie this season and for good reason. The 6’8” Slovenian is quick on his feet and creates tons of opportunities with his fast break and quick passes. The Mavericks also added big man DeAndre Jordan, a fantastic finisher in the paint. Fans are hopeful for a playoff appearance this year.
The Pheonix Suns take on the Mavericks at home tonight at 9:30pm. The Suns acquired Deandre Ayton as the No. 1 overall draft pick so it should be a rookie showdown with Doncic and the Mavs.
LeBron and the Lakers go up against the Portland Trailblazers on Thursday, October 17th. James has stated the team still needs a lot of work to build up to playoff contention, but he’s excited for the season opener just the same.
“We need to improve on everything. We are new to eachother so we have to.” –LeBron James
