Bangladesh became a full member of the International Cricket Council in 2000 and subsequently played its first Test match against India in the very same year. The country has been already an associate member of the International Cricket Council since 1977.

Even though Bangladesh has yet to win a major title, the team has already enjoyed some great success in International cricket such as in One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals. Nevertheless, they had not as much success in Test match thus far. The team keeps improving in recent years and the country had multiple highly successful Bangladeshi Captains who paved the way for the squad. We have compiled a list of the most successful Bangladeshi Cricket Captains for you.

Throughout the years, the Bangladeshi team has had 17 different captains. Gazi Ashraf Hossain captained the team in its first-ever international match against Pakistan in 1986.

Mashrafe Mortaza

Mashrafe Mortaza is considered to be the best Bangladeshi cricket captain in history. He played in his first Test match on November 8th, 2001 against Zimbabwe and has also been ranked as one of the world’s most famous athletes by ESPN World FAME 100 in 2019.

 

 

He is the most successful captain of Bangladesh in One Day Internationals and Twenty20 International matches. Furthermore, he captained the team for eight matches in total between 2009 and 2010 but was in and out due to injuries at that time. Nevertheless, he went on to captain the team for a total of 28 Twenty20 matches, 88 One Day Internationals, and a single Test match. In March 2020 he announced that he would be stepping down as Bangladesh’s ODI captain, and he recorded his 50th win in an ODI in his final match.

Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan certainly deserves his spot on our list of the most successful Bangladeshi cricket captains. He was the International Cricket Council’s world-best all round in all three formats of the game in 2015 – he was the first and only cricketer in the world to achieve this status. Al Hasan made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe on August 6th, 2006.

 

 

Soon later he also made his Test debut on May 6th against India and became the team’s vice-captain in June 2009. After Mashrafe Mortaza got injured he took over the captaincy and became one of the youngest captains in history at 22 years. He was Bangladesh’s leading all-rounder between 2008 and 2019 and was ranked first amongst ODI all-rounders by the ICC in 2009.

Habibul Bashar

Habibul Bashar is one of the most successful Bangladeshi cricket captains and under his captaincy, the team celebrated its first Test victory against Zimbabwe in 2004. The Bangladeshi team also beat Australia, Sri Lanka, India, and South Africa in limited overs matches when he captained the team.

 

 

Bashar captained the team for a fairly short amount of time from 2004 until 2007, but he had notable success during his captaincy. Bangladesh scored its first One Day International series win and also beat the reigning world champions Australia in a One Day International at Cardiff. Even though he played a fairly disappointing 2007 World Cup with an average of 13.12, Bangladesh did quite well. Nevertheless, he decided to step down from captaincy but remained a part of the team afterward.

Mahmudullah

Mahmudullah is the fourth most successful Bangladeshi cricket captain on our list. He played his first ODI for the Bangladeshi team against Sri Lanka during Bangladesh’s tour of the country in July 2007. Two years later, he made his test match debut against West Indies and became Bangladesh’s third player to take a five wicket hall in a Test debut.

 

 

It took quite a while for him to captain the team. Mahmudullah replaced Shakib as the team’s captain in January 2018 and became the tenth player to lead Bangladesh in Test matches. Under his captaincy, Bangladesh recorded their highest total in T20Is (193/5) but finally lost the match for Sri Lanka in Tri-nation Series in Bangladesh. He captained the team for a total of six Test matches and 12 T20 matches.

Mushfiqur Rahim

Mushfiqur Rahim is considered to be the best and most successful captain of Bangladesh in tests. He is an extremely versatile player and is also the highest individual scorer by a Bangladesh batsman in Test cricket. Rahim played made his first appearance for the Bangladeshi national team on the country’s tour of England in 2005.

 

 

On 20 September 2011, Rahim became Bangladesh’s team captain, taking over from Shakib Al Hasan after a disappointing tour of Zimbabwe. He remained the team’s captain for seven years from 2011 until 2018 and during that time he captained the team in 34 Test matches, 37 ODI’s, and 23 T20’s. In the 2012 Asia Cup, under Rahim’s captaincy, Bangladesh won two out of the three games they have played and made it to the final for the first time but ended up short losing to Pakistan.
