The tournament is therefore also the only cricket competition in the Top 10 most-watched sporting events based on worldwide TV ratings.

ICC Champions Trophy – One of the Most Popular Cricket Tournaments in the World

The ICC Champions Trophy was played for the first time in 1998 and is the second-most important cricket tournament. The tournament is played approximately every four years and its latest edition took place in England and Wales.

The International Cricket Council came up with the idea of a short cricket tournament to raise money to develop the game in non-test playing countries. Many experts and fans also refer to the competition as a mini-World Cup.

The tournament quickly became highly successful and usually lasts just about two weeks. There are eight teams competing for the title and all full members of the ICC were involved. However, since 2009 only the eight highest-ranked teams of the ICC ODI Rankings.

Since 2015 all games of the competition are played on a rotation basis between One Day International and Twenty20 International format. Nowadays, the competition is taking place approximately every two years.

Moreover, the ICC granted all games of the tournament ODI status. Therefore it is certainly one of the most important cricket tournaments in Asia.

Australian Tri-Series – Most Popular Cricket Tournaments in the World

The Australian Tri-Series is a One Day International cricket tournament in Australia. Australia is hosting the tournament and plays against two touring teams. The competition is taking place during the Australian cricket season from December to February.

 

 

The first edition of the tournament took place in 1979-80 and ran every year until 2007-08. Since then, it took place twice, in the 2011-12 and 2014-15 season. Afterward, the hosts decided to change the format to Twenty20 International.

England, New Zealand, and Australia were the first three teams to compete in the new format. The hosts of the tournament are also the most successful team – Australia won the tournament 21 times.
