Monday Night Football is a long standing tradition in American professional football. It usually pits two strong teams against each other, making for maximum entertainment value. This Monday, we have an AFC South match-up between the red hot Houston Texans and the 5-5 Tennessee Titans.
Houston is leading the division with a two game advantage over the third place Titans. Since losing their first 3 games of the season, the Texans have gone on a blazing 7 game winning streak. They are looking to take their franchise history 8th win tonight at home. They are 4.5 point favorites so on paper, it sounds like the Texans should take this game. But there are some factors we should look at when coming into this game.
At one point, the Texans had won 5 games in a row vs the Titans, but the trend is leaning towards their opponents in recent times. Tennessee has taken 3 of the last 4, with the most recent in Week 2 of this season.
In an entertaining and kind of funky game, Tennessee managed to hold onto an early lead to outlast the Texans. The first half showed some real Titan intensity but that bottomed out in the second half. If the Titans can jump out like they did in this game, but keep pushing all 4 quarters, we might see an unexpected win from them.
This month, the Titans beat some heavy hitters, so they’re not slouching this season. They took down the Cowboys, who are in first place in the NFC East with a score of 28-14 and followed up with another big win over the AFC East leaders, the New England Patriots. They outscored the Pats 34-10. Sure, the Titans did not get the W last week against Indianapolis last week (38-10), but often times teams fight harder after a big loss.
The Texans have won 7 straight, but they weren’t all blowouts. In fact, they barely won their last two games. Against both the Redskins and the Broncos, Houston was only able to win by 2 points.
The Titans will go from a cold Nashville stadium with questionable sod to a warm Houston stadium with state of the art turf and a retractable roof. Tennessee is much colder than Texas (34 vs 57 today) and by November, the sod at Nissan Stadium in Nashville is pretty beat up and needs replacing. The Titans will have the advantage of moving to a warmer climate with improved field conditions.
Titans QB Marcus Mariota was delivered a stinger last game vs the Colts and was considered questionable during the week. Practice was limited on Thursday, but it looks like the quarterback will be back under center for Monday Night Football. Mariota was out for the last matchup with an elbow injury, so his presence this week will certainly have an impact on the game.
