Home I Latest News I MLB American League Wildcard Preview
The MLB postseason has arrived! We kick things off with the AL Wildcard game between the Minnesota Twins and the New York Yankees.
The Wildcard game features two teams from each league going head to head in a single game playoff. Wildcard teams are the organizations with the best winning percentage, after the 3 division winner teams. The winner goes on to play the #1 ranked team in the Division Series playoffs. The National League and the American League both hold Wildcard playoff games.
After 162 hard fought games in the regular season, it all comes down to this one game.
The Twins are embracing the “Rags to Riches” and “Cinderella Story” cliches heading in to Tuesday’s game. Last season they racked up over 100 losses and now they are one game away from serious October baseball. This is Minnesota’s first Wildcard berth.
This season the Twins had a tough time agains the Yankees, winning just 2 out of their 6 meetings, including being swept 3 games at Yankee Stadium just a few weeks ago. Actually, Minnesota has struggled against New York for quite a few seasons (31-78 since 2002).
But the organization is still hopeful.
“We’re going to go there expecting a win,” manager Paul Molitor said recently. “That’s the mindset you have to have. We’re going to a place where we recently were and weren’t successful in three games, but the way things are going and the way these guys are playing right now, I like our chances. In a game-scenario, anything can go down.”
Led by rookie bomber Aaron Judge’s record breaking 52 homeruns this season, the Yankees are looking to be the favorites. This will be their sixth Wildcard game, and this one they have the home field advantage.
The previous 4 postseason outings between the teams, all of which have been Division Series, have gone in favor of New York. Some of the best Yankee players haven’t even seen a postseason game before. Aaron Judge, catcher Gary Sanchez, and starting pitcher Luis Severino are all making their October debuts.
Severino will face off against the experienced Ervin Santana on the mound. Santana had a pretty good season in 2017, making the All-Star Team and posting the 11th best ERA of the MLB (3.28).
Only 5 Wildcard teams have gone on to win the World Series; the Florida Marlins, Anaheim Angels, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardenals, and most recently, the San Francisco Giants in 2014.
The game is scheduled to start at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, October 3rd at 8pm E.T.
