Fans of Major League Baseball can all breathe a sigh of relief…the season is finally upon us! Ball parks across the United States opened their gates again on March 29th, the earliest Opening Day in baseball history. I guess even the powers that be couldn’t wait to get started!
This year also featured all 30 teams playing on Opening Day, in contrast to last year, where only 3 games were played.
World Series Champions of 2017, the Houston Astros, kicked off the year with an away win versus their cross-state rivals, the Texas Rangers. They ended the 4 game series with 3 wins and a loss. After one week of baseball, the Astros are leading the AL West at 6-1 after sweeping the Orioles at home.
Over in the AL East, the Red Sox jumped out in dramatic fashion, battling 12 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays before a game-winning RBI single from Hanley Ramirez.
Fans got a little extra entertainment during the national anthem at the Mariners v Twins home opener when a bald eagle landed on Seattle pitcher, James Paxton. The massive bird had been brought out for the anthem and it appeared to be confused by the crowd. Paxton was in the outfield warming up when the eagle made a bee line for his head! Talk about calm under pressure!
