The final of the Worlds 2017 is the most important event in the League of Legends eSports calendar. Would SK Telecom T1 get its fourth World title or would Samsung Galaxy take revenge for the end of last year? In the end, the latter happened, though nobody expected a demolishing 3-0 score. That caused images as memorable as Faker’s tears at the end of the game.
More than 40,000 fans of League of Legends followed the Worlds 2017 final live from the Beijing National Stadium. Some fans even paid €1,700 for an entry into the resale. The competition was followed from all corners of the world. In fact, in some countries special events were organized. The reason is that the fans did not want to miss anything that happened between SK Telecom T1 and Samsung Galaxy. In Spain, the final could be seen in several cinemas.
According to the data offered by eSports Charts, the number of viewers that followed the decisive match live via the Internet was over 59 million, a figure that takes into account China, a country in which eSports are followed en mass. This data shows that almost 98% of total viewership belonged to China. While the remaining two million were distributed throughout the rest of the world.
It is striking that the most watched game of the 136 hours of play issued was not the final. Moreover, the meeting between SK Telecom T1 and Samsung Galaxy occupied the fourth position. The number 1 was for the semifinal that saw SK Telecom T1 versus RNG, which had more than 106 million viewers. Behind that match was the second semifinal between Samsung Galaxy and Team WE (90,500,059 viewers). Lastly, the quarterfinals between Team WE and Cloud9 raked in 77,847,239 viewers.
If we subtract the Chinese audience, the most watched game of the Worlds 2017 was the final with 2,002,061 viewers followed by the semi-final between SK Telecom T1 and Royal Never Give Up (1,528,218 viewers) and the quarterfinals between SK Telecom T1 and Misfits (1,455,470 viewers).
