Home I Football I Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur – Race for the Champions League
There’s a mouth-watering game on Sunday as the fight for the Champions League places really heats up: Liverpool v Spurs is live from Anfield at 16:30 on Sky Sports.
Third-placed Liverpool are two points ahead of Tottenham (in fifth) and will be keen to both extend that lead and avenge the Spurs’ 4-1 mauling of them back in October. That thrashing jolted Liverpool into an eighteen game unbeaten streak before (surprisingly) getting turned over by Swansea a couple of weeks back. However, the Reds have only lost three league games all season- and none of those have been at Anfield.
The Spurs were very impressive in beating Man United 2-0 in midweek but their away record against the other “Big Six” sides makes them impossible to back at 13/5. They haven’t won away against any of the top opposition in their last ten attempts, and have lost each of the last four. Dele Alli has struggled to replicate last year’s form in 2018- he was magnificent when the sides last met at Wembley- and it’s hard to see the Spurs becoming the first side to win at Anfield this season given the aforementioned records. Liverpool are 11/10 to win at home and there’s nothing wrong with that price.
It’s worth remembering that Klopp is unbeaten in his last twelve home league meetings against the “Big Six”- the last defeat was over two years ago. The Spurs have only won once at Anfield in their last twenty-three attempts. The more you look at the numbers, the more appealing 11/10 Liverpool becomes…
As regards team news- it looks like Virgil van Dijk will be back for Liverpool, which certainly strengthens them. The Spurs are pretty much at full strength with Toby Alderweireld unlikely to be risked and new signing Lucas Moura having to “earn his place”, according to manager Mauricio Pochettino. Serge Aurier is back and with the attacking players on show it promises to be a belting game.
Mo Salah looks like a shade of value at 9/2 (Bet365) to open the scoring. Only Harry Kane (21) has netted more times than the Egyptian wizard this season, with both averaging a goal every 98 minutes. Kane is the same price but with Liverpool fancied, makes less appeal. Both players are 13/10 to find the net anytime (Ladbrokes, Coral, Betfair Sports, Paddy Power) and they seem like perfectly backable prices for two guys who scored 40 league goals between them before we even got to February.
Roberto Firmino -the man with the whitest teeth in the Premier League- is having a belting season and has been involved in 11 goals in his last 11 games (8 goals, 3 assists). He’s already scored as many league goals for Liverpool as he has in any of his previous seasons and his all-round contribution makes him value at 11/2 to be named Man of the Match with Bet365.
Spurs are a lot more cautious on the road against the big sides and with such a tough run of fixtures (Man United Wednesday, Liverpool tomorrow, Arsenal next) it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Lilywhites try and stifle ‘Pool and set up defensively. Surely Pochettino would be happy with a point with the Champions League race so close?
Under 2.5 goals is 11/8 (William Hill, Bet365, Coral) and represents a spot of value considering the above and the fact that both sides have their full complement of defenders to pick from. 16/1 is widely available for a 0-0 draw and if you’re one of those who likes to bite your nails for 90 minutes, you could be laughing at the end.
Whatever you’re backing, best of luck and enjoy what promises to be a fantastic game.
