We are coming down to the homestretch of exciting action from the 23rd Winter Olympic Games. Let’s take a look at some results from this week in PyeongChang, South Korea.
Here are the top 10 countries in the medal race. Norway is leading with 13 gold, 14 silver, and 10 bronze. As the games come to a close, it looks like Norway will sustain their lead over the competition.
The US Women’s Hockey team had a fantastic and dramatic final versus hockey powerhouse, Canada. In a sudden death, overtime shootout, Maddie Rooney, just 20 years old, made the save of her life to clinch the gold medal for the US. This is the first hockey gold for the Americans since 1998, while Canada has won the gold for the last 4 Olympic Games.
The Big Air competition is one of 4 new events debuting at this Olympics. It is similar to Aerial Skiing, but with a snowboard instead of skis. Contestants hurl themselves down a 160 foot ramp that launches them into the air, where they perform various tricks.
The first ever gold medal was won by the favorite going into the competition, Austria’s Anna Gasser. Gasser rocked an incredible double double 1080 on the final run of the event to score a 96. In Big Air, you have 3 runs and the top 2 scores combine for your total. Gasser had a score of 89 in a previous run and her total edged out American Jamie Anderson for the gold medal.
Winning a gold medal is an amazing achievement. But winning AND breaking the world record has to be nearly impossible! This year, a handful of athletes set new world records, including China’s Wu Dajing, who broke the 500m speed skating world record TWICE, once in the quarterfinals and then again in the finals. Dajing’s win represents the first medal for China in PyeongChang.
Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir broke their own ice dancing world record in their final Olympics appearance. They beat their old record by almost a full point, going from 82.68 to 83.67.
Then we have Russian ice skater Evgenia Medvedeva, who broke her own world record in the Women’s Short Program. However, her joy did not last long, as just minutes later her teammate broke that new record. The 15 year old prodigy, Alina Zagitova, overtook Medvedeva’s record by 1.31 points.
