Home I eSports I eSports I Team Liquid Wins The International 2017
Team Liquid is the champion of The International 7. The European team defeated Newbee with a clean score of 3-0. They lifted the Aegis and took home more than $10 million. We have the full recap here!
Under the captaincy of Kuro “KuroKy” Salehi Takhasomi, Liquid fell into the Lower Bracket on the first day of the eliminations. However, the team made its way back to the top with accurate strategies and exemplary performance from the players.
This Saturday, at the last day of the competition, they beat LGD.Forever Young in the final of the Lower Bracket. The team made an incredible comeback, as the Europeans lost badly the first match. However, the side emerged from the ashes and took the next two, securing a place in the final.
The opponent of the grand final could not be considered easy. Newbee, the Chinese favorite and winner of TI4, arrived ready to become the first two-time champion of the competition. However, the Chinese did not count on the sensational plays of KuroKy and his teammates.
In the first match, there was no balance. Team Liquid remained ahead and dominant from the start. Ivan Borislavov “MinD_ContRoL” Ivanov’s Nature Prophet quickly opened up the kills for the side. Then it was Lasse “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen’s turn to cause havoc with his Lifestealer.
With the rapid siege from their opponents, Newbee could not do much to defend their base. They were knocked down in the 27th minute, with a score of 29 to 13.
In the second game, the story began differently. This time Newbee came out ahead with incredible plays from Xu “Moogy” Han and Song “Sccc” Chun. They were playing Anti-Mage and Queen of Pain, respectively.
However, neither the kills nor the ganks of the Chinese were enough to stop Amer “Miracle-“Al-Barkawi’s Alchemist. He was able to farm very well during the game and helped Liquid to decisively finish the game. In combination with MATUMBAMAN’s Necrophos ultimate, the tower sieging power of MinD_ContRoL’s Venomancer allowed the side to take control of the game.
Moreover, the incredible support from KuroKy’s Ancient Apparition and Maroun “GH” Merhej’s Earthshaker got Liquid their 2nd series win.
Flustered, the Chinese from Newbee entered the third game with one last chance to change the story. Choosing a strong pushing draft, Newbee started the game well with some exceptional plays.
However, they managed to stay ahead only for a few moments of the game. The game had team fights with an equal number of kills and Aegis for both teams. However, a fight in front of the Roshan was decisive for the Europeans to destroy the enemy base.
After a triple-kill by Miracle- on his Juggernaut, Liquid just went all-in on Newbee. The Chinese side no longer had buybacks and could not do much more than a “GG” call.
With the victory, Liquid maintained the tradition of Western teams becoming International champions in odd years. In addition, they made history by being the first team to win the grand final of TI with a clean score.
One of the best players in the world in DotA 2, Danil ”Dendi” Ishutin, suffered a crushing defeat by a bot developed by OpenAI.
Skynet is getting closer. The International is the greatest tournament in the world of DotA 2. Here the champions of the game compete for the biggest prize pool in the history of eSports.
With the launch of Horizon Zero Dawn, we theorize what AI is. Maybe we are a little closer to that day, maybe we’re exaggerating, but what happened at The International 2017 is quite interesting.
Advancement in AI has shown robots are able to beat a man in games such as chess. Now, Elon Musk has been developing a bot for a 1v1 with the star of Na’Vi, Danil “Dandi” Ishutin. The bot immediately showed at the start of the first game that it was a serious competitor, besting Dendi in 5 minutes with 2-kills. The bot performed several perfect maneuvers, even canceling the player’s healing items.
In the second game, after the bot got the first kill, Dendi gave up with noble simplicity. Being defeated twice, Dendi was unable to enter the third battle.
He was surprised that a bot could defeat humans, claiming the bot was “a bit like humans but something like that”. Last week, the AI also won against Syed “Suma1L” Hassan and Artour “Arteezy” Babaev.
Before the match, technical director of OpenAI Greg Brockman said that AI has already played more games than any professional player in DotA 2. The bot is able to analyze the game of the opponent and is self-learning.
The AI was trained by playing against a copy of itself, with no human experts to help. Earlier versions stood and made stupid moves, such as standing still in the base and walking aimlessly around the map. Because of machine learning, the bot learned from its mistakes in a very short time. The version that beat the professional players is very strong, getting loads of hits and predicting moves of the pros.
OpenAI was created by Elon Musk as a nonprofit organization. The aim is to prevent AI from destroying the world, something Musk saw several years ago. This AI will benefit humanity in the future rather than threaten it. At least for now, the AI is only able to show off the e-sports gimmick. However, the next OpenAI plan is to teach the bot to participate in real 5-vs-5 matches.
An interesting future is ahead of us. We can easily imagine that we will be seeing more intelligent machines with AI in near future.
