Home I Featured Articles I The Future of CS:GO and DotA 2
The absurd success of PUBG took the game to a new level of simultaneous players on Steam. The new number reached is 2 million players online at the same time.
With this, it becomes the first game to reach that milestone on the platform, overrunning the heavyweights of Valve, DotA 2, CS: GO, and Team Fortress 2.
Two years ago, DotA 2 was the first game to break the record of 1 million players online on Steam. This number was achieved by PUBG in just under 1 month.
The online game, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (or PUBG), recorded a peak of more than 859 thousand simultaneous players. It surpassed DotA 2 and became the most played game on Steam, the main gaming platform for PC.
With the feat, the multiplayer game that kills off 100 players in a battle to the death has stirred a storm. The style of “Greedy Games” has also outperformed the best Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players. The biggest peak previously recorded on Steam was by DotA 2, with 1.29 million players online on a day in 2016.
Record of most played games on Steam:
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds continues to grow impressively. In recent days, it has managed to reach a new milestone. It has managed to break the record of online players at the same time as CS:GO.
CS:GO was the second game with more online players simultaneously on Steam. It had a mark of 850,485, but PUBG broke that record with 877,844 and later on reached the 2 million figure.
In recent months, the number of active players has fallen sharply. So, some of the top analysts and players have been discussing the problems in the game.
Although there is no reason to worry about its future yet, statistics clearly show that something is wrong with Valve’s golden egg. More than 1 million simultaneous users is a thing of the past, and even this was almost halved in just a year and a half.
Analysts agree that involving new players could be one of the best ways to make improvements to Custom Gaming. Jake “SirActionSlacks” Kanner, a figure within the community, is also giving his inputs.
According to his idea, the report system should be improved. You could throw a lot on the enjoyment factor. Moreover, a separate algorithm should ensure that you will not be placed together for a while with the one you’ve been reporting. Former pro player, Kyle, has spoken, though he went even further, meaning that direct loss players have three chances before they are banned.
Slacks’ other suggestion was that positive actions could be evaluated by the system. Commend is worth nothing and other methods do not really have the support. Incentives are a very important part of building a healthy community.
DotA 2 and CS:GO are among the biggest eSports titles, yet they are struggling to increase the community.
On November 1, The Dueling Fates update with the 2 new heroes will obviously bring back many former players. However, it is a question of what will be enough for the latest update. In the future, it may be worth thinking about Valve’s policy of releasing patches.
PUBG’s success has paved the way for the CS:GO community and developers. Of course, I’m not saying that they are not interested in the feedback from the players in the past. However, they did not try so much as in the past.
The new Dust 2 map initially had a lot of bugs, but that’s why it got into the beta. Valve specifically wrote in the update log to thank the feedback.
Since the release of PUBG, people have been playing much less Counter-Strike, as shown by Steam statistics.
In the skin business, now fewer people are buying and investing in CS:GO. Thus, the market is declining. This is clearly seen by Valve and they seem to be doing almost everything for the benefit of the buyers.
Of course, a better anti-cheat would still please everyone, but in my opinion, Valve is not doing everything right at the moment. They stopped at the end of the pitch and changed the tactics of the game. That’s why pistol updates are constantly trying to make weapons more skill-based and reduce chance of random hits. For the moment there is no big fear for the future of CS:GO as there is still no similar export-compatible game, despite the ESL’s attempt of creating a PUBG tournament.
“Battlegrounds” is an online multiplayer shooting game format where up to 100 players parachute onto a massive 64 km² island.
Everyone starts the game with clothes only – sometimes not even that since they take up inventory – and they must explore buildings and other constructions to find weapons, defense equipment, and healing items.
The goal is to prepare for the worst and fight to the death against others who are in the same situation as you. After all that you must be the last one to survive. Died? You’re out. You can search for the next match.
As the map is very large, from time to time the action is being restricted to smaller and smaller areas. The confrontation becomes inevitable, but the alliances do not. Team play is only allowed in specific game modes.
During the rest of the time, Battlegrounds is the pure “every man for himself and God against all” format.
Although the game has recently been heavily criticized for the various ads in the game’s home menu, most of the criticism came from our Chinese friends. As reported, the game has sold more than 10 million copies. The game developer is investing heavily in the title to improve the experience for PC gamers. They are working on a Xbox One version of the game as well.
Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds is more popular than League of Legends and Overwatch in South Korean Internet cafes, according to Gametrics data.
It is currently the most played game with 24.28% of the quota in these rooms, followed by League of Legends -23.62%, and Overwatch -13.73%. Although it is not too strange for a competitive game to outperform League of Legends during its first cycle – Overwatch did so in June of last year – PUGB is expected to fall past the current phenomenon. The interest is in seeing how long it will hold this position.
So PUGB is quite possibly the first of many titles to cause problems in the near future to the well reputed titles like DotA 2 and CS:GO. The incentives have been taken by CS:GO but still, they have a long way to go for a better future while we wait for November 1st to see the response of DotA 2 developers.
