The English Premier League is taking a break this weekend. But don’t worry, there are some exciting matches coming up. Read our Southampton vs Arsenal FA Cup betting tips and preview!
After two great campaigns in the Premier League with Ronald Koeman, things haven’t been easy for Southampton. The team is taking a while to adjust, not only to the new coach’s ideas, but also to some changes in the squad. It was a very wealthy summer for the Saints with the sales of Sadio Mané, Pele, Wanyama, and Juanmi for almost 90 million euros.
One of the reasons for Southampton’s success in recent years was their solid defense. The Saints only allowed 41 goals in the Premier League last year, which is an impressive number when considering that they play around twelve games against top teams.
Despite allowing already 26 goals this season, the Saint have recorded 8 clean sheets over the last 20 games. Adding to this, Southampton featured two incredible victories over Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-finals, both with 1-0. Even though they couldn’t count on their best defender, van Dijk, Southampton presented a very solid organization. Once again, the Saints showed their ability to overcome tough situations with their new coach, Claude Puel, doing an amazing job after losing so many quality players last summer. Therefore, the appearance at Wembley for the League Cup Final is a fair reward for the team’s good job in recent years.
Arsenal is their next opponent, a team that is averaging 2.50 goals in their last 10 games. These two teams already met in the League Cup Quarter-Finals with Southampton featuring a huge surprise in a game where Arsène Wenger spared many of his key players. Granit Xhaka won’t play this game due to suspension while Mohamed Elneny is currently in the African Cup of Nations. Therefore, we expect Wenger to present a squad with several young players for this FA Cup against Southampton.
After losing against Manchester City and Everton in December, Arsenal won the following six games, narrowing the gap to Chelsea to 8 points. Theo Walcott said that Arsène Wenger still believes in the team’s chances of winning the title, which makes the Premier League a priority for them at the moment. Besides the absences of Xhaka and Elneny, Wenger also can’t count on Cazorla and Debuchy, and Walcott should also miss this game.
