The Esports Championship Series is back. Founded by FACEIT in partnership with Twitch last April, the ECS will be returning for Season 3 on Feb. 18, with sign-ups for the Open Qualifiers beginning Feb. 13. Two Open Qualifiers will allow four teams, two from Europe and two from North America, to earn their spot in the ECS Development League. The Open Qualifiers will be single elimination until the quarterfinals and semifinals, which will be best-of-three matches. The top two teams from each Qualifier will move on. Four invited teams will compete alongside the four Open Qualifier teams in the Development League. After a series of best-of-two matches, the top two teams from each region will progress to the ECS Promotional Playoffs. Let’s take a look at a couple of qualifiers.
One of the most anticipated matches of the week in the professional World of CS:GO is Team Liquid vs Immortals, taking place in the US on Friday. Since Team Liquid brought on Russel “Twistzz” Van Dulken, they have looked really strong. The 17-year-old Canadian has managed to get 1,419 kills in the past few months with 1,122 deaths, making a good K/D of 1.26. The player seems to be a good replacement for Jacob “Pimp” Winneche in the CS:GO roster.
The side of Liquid is currently backed by many to wreak havoc in the Esports Championship Series Season 3. Their oldest member of the team, Jonathan “EliGE” Jablonowski, will be looking to make big plays happen with “Twistzz”. The 19-year-old has summed up a total of 9,883 Kills with 9,273 deaths, having a K/D of over 1.
As for the side of Immortals, their roster is also star-studded and the new player Lincoln “fnx” Lau has adjusted well with 1,236 kills and 1,086 deaths since the start of 2017. Although the side of Immortals has been quite inconsistent as of late, they can easily take on and beat anyone.
For the much-needed motivation, they will be looking to Henrique “HEN1” Teles for an exhibition of amazing performances. The player has managed 7,481 kills to 5,723 deaths making an impressive K/D of 1.31 in the long run.
The past head-to-head matchups also favor Immortals, with Team Liquid securing only one win from 8 meetings between the two teams.
Since the start of 2017, the lineup of Cloud 9 has been under the weather and failed to perform up to standards. They will require the expertise of Tyler “Skadoodle” Latham and Mike “shroud” Grzesiek to get them a much-needed win.
While “Skadoodle” is not a big fan of the headshots, he managed to get 11,478 kills to 9,516 deaths making a K/D of 1.21. Assisting him will be the Canadian,“shroud”, who has a 53% headshot percentage while having 11,251 kills and 9,006 deaths which makes a good 1.14 K/D ratio.
In the past five games, the side has only had two wins. On the other side of the story, their opponents, Ghost Gaming, are winless in their last six games and have played a total sum of 10 games professionally. By the looks of things, their fortunes are not changing against Cloud 9.
As compared to the impressive trophy cabinet of Cloud9, the side of Ghost Gaming has an achievement of 3-4th place finish in the ESL One: Cologne 2017 – North America Open Qualifier. They have a mountain to climb against the well-experienced Cloud9 team and will require their best men to achieve the impossible task.
One of them happens to be Matthew “WARDELL” Bowman Yu. The 18 year old Canadian has a total sum of 1,736 kills and 1,405 deaths to his name, and of those kills only 25% are headshots. He will be looking to inspire his team to a much-needed miracle.
