The week is almost over and there have been plenty of exciting moments in eSports. We take a look back in our eSports Boulevard News Week 9.
It is the dominating event in our eSports Boulevard News Week 9: The Kiev Major is approaching quickly in the world of DotA 2 and a new debate has been opened up by FACEIT’s team member, Milos Nedelljkovic. According to Milos, regions will be divided for the open qualifiers. The regional locking will ensure that no team from outside their region will play the matches. This idea is great as far as most of the teams from outside region enter in the open qualifiers and create problems for the rest of the participating teams.
A 3/5 rule will not be applicable if the team has foreign players that belong to different areas. The decision was made as a result of The Boston Major American qualifiers where CIS teams along with European teams made their entry in the open qualifiers of North American region. Eight teams will be advancing with the regional qualifiers into the main tournament. The open qualifiers for Kiev’s Major will take place beginning the 6th of March.

DotA 2 has hit a huge milestone. Dotabuff, a site that tracks stats on every game of DotA 2 played around the world, announced that there has been a combined 3 billion games of DotA 2 played over the course of the game’s lifetime. Considering the game was first released a mere four years ago, that’s an incredible accomplishment that represents nearly a billion games played per year.
Of course, that number only includes games that have been played since the release of DotA 2. Considering the popularity of the Warcraft 3 map that inspired DotA 2, it’s easy to imagine there are a few billion more games of DotA that we may never record due to the lack of analytics available at the time.
Despite its momentous importance for the game, the 3 billionth match of DotA 2 seemed to be a fairly ordinary affair. Dotabuff linked the match history in their twitter post, and it seemed like something ripped straight out of any casual player’s normal solo queue experience.
The game was played out in SE Asia, one of the regions best known for their adherence to DotA as opposed to its most obvious competitor, League of Legends. An absurdly fed Bounty Hunter appeared to carry the game almost on his own, a fact that his hilarious end-game inventory highlighted quite nicely.
The first two days saw ADC still dominated by Jhin and Varus, mid lane still seeing mostly control mage picks, and top lane sticking with tanks. Support players continue to go with the mages with one hope for tank supports, Braum. The jungle has been mostly as expected with lethality champions being the go-to picks, but Elise made a surprising and successful return to the rift.
For the most part, supports are sticking to Karma, Malzahar, and Zyra. They help push waves, provide some magic damage, and bring crowd control to the team. However, Braum has been one surprisingly strong pick that isn’t a mage. Braum brings much-needed tankiness in a world full of lethality and damage, but the big thing he brings is Unbreakable.
As mentioned above most games see Jhin and Varus in the ADC role; long range projectile shooters. What’s better to counter that than a shield that stops those projectiles? If the ADC meta continues the way it is, don’t be surprised if you don’t see more Braum picks.
