The progression of the ESL has been quite exceptional over the years. This progress can be exemplified by the partnership with Emirates Airlines, as eSports viewing will be on every flight by June 2018.
From March 2018, on-demand eSports content will roll out on the Inflight Entertainment Systems and by June Emirates will cover all of their 150 destinations. Multiple titles of eSports and their biggest moments on the Grand Stage of ESL will be played on the flights.
To bring eSports in the mainstream and increase in the visibility of the industry, ESL has been accomplishing common objectives for the last few years.
“At ESL, we are always looking to increase the visibility of eSports and are happy to work with Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, on our first in-flight entertainment deal. As a truly global company with events all around the world, I’m sure that players and fans will enjoy ESL’s eSports highlights as they travel on Emirates airline.”
-Torsten Haux, VP of Global Media Rights at ESL
Recently, flights from eight African and Middle Eastern countries to the United States have placed a ban on tablets and laptops. However, there are rumors going around regarding an expansion into and out of other destinations. For the travelling enthusiasts of eSports, ESL’s new investment could be the big breakthrough.
ESL has over 2,000 hours of eSports content and live gaming. Moreover, it has over 100 million digital viewers. By the end of next year, it has been realistically projected that the broadcast will expand to 250 million eSports fans. They will also be able to accommodate 2 billion gamers.
Modern Times Group (MTG) is going big in eSports investments. In July 2015, 74% of the Turtle Entertainment was acquired by Modern Times Group (MTG), which is currently operating under the ESL brand as the world’s largest eSports company. Previously a non-eSports based company, MTG acquired the majority of the ownership after investing €78 million.
Since the end of the year 2015, DreamHack has also under the control of MTG. DreamHack is amongst the giants of the eSports industry who organize the world’s largest digital festivals.
It was announced by the ESL that they were planning on launching an exclusive eSports Television channel. In February, 2017, there were plans that the television style of production will be implemented in eSports which could possibly increase the popularity. Special projects were under the supervision with former Fox TV executive David Hill. They included the first step in the investment which further included training production teams and recruiting new broadcast talent.
ESL Pro League Season 5 officially came to an end last weekend. The league has decided which of the top 6 teams from the region will battle it out in the LAN finals in Dallas.
The final standings show only the top 6 North American teams out of 14 which will compete in the Grand Finals of ESL Pro League Season 5. From 31st May to 4th June, the Verizon Theatre in Dallas, Texas, will host the LAN finals.
There will be a total sum of 12 teams, where 6 will be from Europe and 6 will be from NA. Coupled with bragging rights and glory, all the teams will be looking to get the lion’s share of the elusive $750,000 in prize money.
The top teams lived up to their name in the North American region, which was something that did not happen in the European Standings. In other words, all the top teams of America will be going to LAN finals. With a win percentage of 76.9%, SK Gaming topped the table, which was highly expected. Team Liquid and Immortals kept the champs on their toes throughout the campaign with 73%. Cloud9 and NRG eSports managed 65% and finally, the last team going to the LAN finals is Optic Gaming with 61.5%.
Renegades, CLG, and Luminosity all came so close to securing a ticket to the LAN Finals. However, fortune did not favor them as they lagged behind Optic by just a single map loss. The biggest shocker of the League was when ex-Winterfox, a.k.a Animal Squad, had to forfeit their spot in the League. Their organization was unable to transfer them from Oceania back to the US in time for official ESL online matches.
