Eight weeks ago, when we were just about to feel the first thrills of the NFL regular season, many DFS players were hoping for something more than exciting football games. The world’s leading Daily Fantasy provider, DraftKings, answered the call and launched their biggest competition ever, not only in terms of prize money but also in difficulty. All the participants had to do in order to win one billion dollars…was predict the perfect line up for NFL Week 1.
The DraftKings Billion Dollar Lineup is known as the highest prized DFS competition so far. The rules were simple – draft the perfect lineup and win. But $1 billion is a lot of money so the players had to not only pick a good or even great lineup, they had to pick the perfect combination of NFL players who scored the most points in NFL Week 1 and fit the salary cap and position requirements.
Players had to pick the top fantasy points scorer in each of the nine key positions – 2 runningbacks, 2 wide receivers, tight end, flex and a team defense/special teams. All that while minding a salary cap of $50,000. Someone calculated that it’s 5,000 times more probable that someone wins the Powerball jackpot than predict the perfect lineup. But hey, we’re talking about big money here. Nobody said it should be easy.
All you had to do to enter the contest was to create an account at DraftKings and draft your players.

The $1 billion prize remained unconquered. The player who game closest to the victory generated 198.44 fantasy points, just 34 from being good enough. He drafted just 3 of the 9 best possible players – RB LeSean McCoy, WR Antonio Brown, and the DST of the Rams. The DFS enthusiast didn’t get to the jackpot but took home $500 for his efforts. Here’s the perfect one billion dollar lineup for NFL Week 1, containing 3 rookies:
QB Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions – 20.08 pts
RB Tarik Cohen, Chicago Bears – 25.3 pts
RB Leonard Fournette, Jacksonville Jaguars – 24.4 pts
WR Antonio Brown, Pittsburgh Steelers – 32.2 pts
WR Kenny Golladay, Detroit Lions – 22.9 pts
TE Austin Hooper, Atlanta Falcons – 23.8 pts
WR Golden Tate, Detroit Lions – 24.4 pts
FLEX LeSean McCoy, Buffalo Bills – 23.9 pts
DST Los Angeles Rams – 28 pts
Even if you take the DraftKings Billion Dollar Lineup competition more as a brand promotional move, it inspired many DFS discussions around the world and created some movement in the betting markets. In the end, nobody won the big money, but a total of 138,341 enthusiasts tried.
DraftKings still awarded some of them, giving away $100,000 in prizes. We are not sure if we would see a similar challenge again soon, as the DK’s team remains silent on future plans for Billion Dollar competitions. But if there will be any and the entrance is free, why don’t you give it a shot? You may become the next DFS billionaire and even appear in one of our future articles.
