Twelve of the best Chinese teams are competing in a major online league, the DotA 2 Professional League. The top prize for the tournament is nearly $160,000. The format of the tournament is a group stage with games in a Bo2 round robin, followed by a Bo3 single-elimination bracket playoff with a Bo5 grand final
The DotA 2 team was founded by LGD Gaming in September, 2016. The young Chinese players were led by the experienced Zhang “xiao8” Ning. In January, 2017, he announced his retirement. However, the line-up was not dissolved but continued to perform with an updated form.
The team did not show much spark until the side qualified for TI7, where they impressed the audience, showing a high level of play. LFY won the “bronze” and entered the new season without changes in the composition. However, the start of the season was so unsuccessful that in February, 2018, the team underwent significant changes.
The changes haven’t gone well for the side. In the DotA Pro Circuit, they sit at 15th place, having only 45 points to show. The highest achievement of the side this season is finishing the Perfect World Masters competition in third place in 2017.
However, in the previous season of the DPL, the side was victorious against Newbee in the grand finale. They will surely be aiming to accomplish the same results this time around. They have every right to do so, even though they are not in the best of forms. However, the unpredictability factor plays a great role for the Chinese DotA team.
For several years, the Chinese team, LGD, has been one of the strongest in the world. The first composition for DotA from LGD Gaming appeared in early January, 2010. However, the most efficient team gathered after TI1, when the talented captain xiao8 stood at the helm. The team was often composed of the best players in China. They owe their fame to players like Gong “ZSMJ” Jian, Liu “Sylar” Jiajun, Yao “Yao” Zhengzheng, Leong “ddc” Fat-meng and other high-profile names.
At TI2, LGD Gaming seemed invincible: They finished the group stage without defeats, but in the finals of the winner’s bracket, they lost to Na’Vi. As a result, the team only took third place. Nevertheless, they retained leadership in the region up to TI3, where 9-12th place was regarded as a failure.
Followed by changes in the composition in February, 2014, the main “brain” of the team, xiao8, left the team. Later, he returned to bring the side to third place at TI5. After the final withdrawal of xiao8 as the head of the team, LGD Gaming could not return to their previous glory for about a year, until TI7.
LGD Gaming finished the TI7 at 4th place, losing to Team Liquid in the lower bracket. This was their highest achievement for the last eight months. However, quite recently the side finished the DAC at second place, losing to Mineski in the final. After this achievement, the side has jumped to eighth place in DPC ranking with 540 points.
They will be fairly confident against LFY.

The new sister team of the organization Vici Gaming, Vici Gaming J, was announced in September, 2016. The honorable captain and sponsor of the team was the famous American basketball player, Jeremy Lin, who showed great interest in eSports. In September, 2017, the old line-up was dissolved and two new ones were created – in China and the United States. The Chinese roster was named VGJ.Thunder.
In the DotA Pro Circuit, the side sits at 7th place with 650 points. They finished first in the Galaxy Battles II: Emerging Worlds and secured a second place in The Bucharest Major, the GESC: Indonesia DotA 2 Minor, and StarLadder ImbaTV Invitational Season 5.
The side finished third in the last season of DPL and will surely be aiming to win the league this time.
The first lineup of Vici Gaming appeared on October 21, 2012. It was assembled from young and little-known players. In the DotA 2 Pro circuit, the side sits at 5th place with 720 points. They might be a good side on paper, however, this is not the case in real life. In the past two months, the performance of the side has declined. They have been performing poorly in the competitions as well as in the local scene. They have won only one series in the DPL so far and are destined for early elimination.
