Home I eSports I eSports I Dota 2: Review of the International 2016
It has been a phenomenal month of August this year for the Dota 2 community. The month started with the International 2016, which had a prize pool of $20,770,460. It is the biggest prize pool in the history of eSports. The tournament kept the fans on the edge of their seats as the crowd favorites OG, Alliance, and Na Vi were all eliminated in the earlier stages. Out of all the teams, OG seemed to have the best chances of winning the tournament. But Team OG was beaten comprehensively by the tournament’s newcomers, TNC. On the other side of the story, Wings Gaming were eventually the TI 6 champions. They statistically had the biggest hero pool in the tournament, which even included heroes like Pudge and Techies.
Surprisingly in the tournament, there was no particular Meta abuse. The past patches saw certain overpowered Outworld Devourer and Invoker picks and bans in almost every single game. However, in this year’s International, nearly every hero had its place. The old Mirana and Shadow Demon combo were seen in the competition simply because the Blink Dagger and Aghanim’s Scepter nuke damage of Mirana were working very well with Shadow Demon’s spells.
There are many highlights of the tournament and one of them was the release of the last remaining Dota 1 heroes, Pit Lord, known as Vrogros, The Abyssal Underlord in Dota 2. The hero was first presented in the All Stars Match of the tournament. Since his release to the community on 23rd of August, 2016, both the win rate and pick rate had their ups and downs. On August 24th, it was 50.46% while after two days, it hit 52.13%. At the same time, as expected, his pick rate was diminishing after the first-day boost of 53.41%, and now it hovers around 34.85%. This diminishing pick rate could be the answer to the increase in the win rate of the hero.
With TI6 coming to an end, the Dota 2 community has their eyes on the changes which are bound to happen in the future. In the Dota 2 calendar, the post-TI roster shuffle is of great importance. All the transfers, rumors, and finalized teams are keeping the attention of the fans.
For Evil Geniuses it looks like Sumail “Suma1L” Hassan is on his way out since he removed all reference to the team on his Twitch and Twitter profile. However, no news has been published yet.
Alliance has officially confirmed they are going to break their roster following the departure of their captain, AdmiralBulldog, Gustav “s4” Magnusson, and one of the founding members, Akke.
For OG, only two players remain following Cr1t and Miracle leaving the team, while MoonMeander departed from the organization after a tough decision.
Arteezy, Bulba, and EternalEnvy have departed from Team Secret, which opened up the path for MentalProtector, MidOne, and ForeV on the team.
Since there is still time before the drop period comes to an end, many rumors are circulating. Currently, the man in the spotlight is Vitalii Volochai. He announced that AdmiralBulldog, Akke, and S4 would be leaving Alliance 12 hours before the official announcement was made by the organization. So for the time being, he has a large crowd for his recent tweets. He has also made statements regarding Team Liquid and Team OG.
