Del Potro has been playing absolutely amazing tennis throughout the event so far. The Argentinean has yet to drop a set and has been looking untouchable. He has beaten Donald Young, Denis Kudla, Fernando Verdasco, and young gun Borna Ćorić. In those four matches he only had to go to the tie-break twice, which speaks for the quality of his play.
John Isner, on the other hand, had to spend way more time on the court than del Potro. The American boy is coming off a 5-set game against Milos Raonic, the favorite in this game. However, Isner managed to come out ahead with a solid performance. It was evident that he was fully focused when it mattered most.
Both players have a fantastic serve, which almost guarantees them to gather some easy points. But del Potro’s biggest strength is his explosive forehand. It is a real weapon on the court and he can cause some serious trouble for opponents with it. He is most likely going to attack Isner with his forehand a lot during this upcoming match.
Isner will have to rely on his crushing serve. He has served more than 100 aces in his four matches; more than double the amount of del Potro. Isner’s biggest weakness is his rather mediocre backhand and the fatigue momentum. Remember, even though he managed to advance this far he still had to spend a lot of time on the court. It takes a lot of energy and effort to move a 2.08m frame. May I remind you of his Wimbledon marathon match against Kevin Anderson?
Isner and del Potro have played a total of 11 games against each other and del Potro has won seven of these games. He has also won their only Grand Slam match this year in France in straight sets.
Statistics and the players themselves might suggest that this will be a really close contest. Both players have reliable weapons which can help them to score some easy points. Nevertheless I think fatigue will be key in this game. Isner will most likely be a little bit tired after some hard-fought matches against Nicolás Jarry and Raonic. Del Potro has won all of his games in straight sets and has been looking really fresh.
He will cause some serious trouble for Isner on the ground if he does not manage to come up with his famous big serves. Therefore I expect del Potro to win this game in less than 4.5 sets. I am also placing a handicap bet on the Argentinean. William Hill is currently offering the best odds for del Potro to win @1.36.
