For most people who are comfortable with season-long versions of fantasy baseball or fantasy football, the conversion to daily games is relatively smooth. After all, you’re using the same strategies you would to draft a team for the long regular season – only on a daily basis.
That same premise holds true for Daily Fantasy Hockey but it is more of an enigma, mostly just because rotisserie hockey leagues are much more rare than yearlong football, baseball, or even basketball groups. This doesn’t mean Daily Fantasy Hockey is harder to play however. In fact, it’s arguably the game you can find the most success at because daily NHL leagues are less mainstream than NFL, MLB, or NBA.
Just like every other Daily Fantasy Sport, who you pick is going to determine how you do. That part is a no-brainer. But it’s the details behind that roster composition that will set you apart from the competition. Here are some of the basics:
– You must field a team of 9 players in total. The breakdown includes 2 LW’s, 2 RW’s, 2 C’s, 2 Defensemen and a goalie.
– The only guaranteed points (usually) in Daily Fantasy NHL is from the goalie position. Goalies get awarded points for team wins and for every save and even get bonus points for a shutout. Of course they lose points for every goal allowed, so in theory they aren’t guaranteed points at all.
– Since a stud goalie can produce big points, it’s good to pay a bit more for the top stars of the night. Of course that is going to leave you shortchanged for a few other positions when doing so. One of the best tried and true strategies for ‘skimp’ positions is finding a lower priced winger or center that is playing on a top tier front line. This is basically an effort to get “free” points off an assist from skating with somebody like Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, or Patrick Kane.
– Predicting who is going to score a goal on any given night is tough. One way to minimize the variables is by selecting players that are usually on their teams power play units. Skating against a shorthanded defense is a great way to get goals.
If you are just starting out playing Daily Fantasy Hockey, these tips will lead you to success faster – but they won’t guarantee victory. It’s recommended to keep a log book for your first few weeks documenting which players you hit on – and those who were misses. Every night you’re going to have hits and misses from your numbers and predictions. But the key to success is controlling them as much as possible.
You don’t necessarily have to be a hockey insider to know how certain games are “supposed to go” on any given night. A quick perusal of the stat lines and the odds will give you your best chances at success for the evening. Here’s how to maximize your efficiency in breaking down a game:
The Sportsbook lines for NHL games can be one of your best indicators of how a game is planned on going down in the eyes of the experts. Reading the odds can be the best way for you to pick a goalie. If a team is a huge moneyline favorite it means the goalie is likely to pick up points for the win and collect a bunch of saves in the process.
Reading the NHL totals from the sportsbook is another good way to find possible scorers for the evening. High over/unders can result from tired defenses, poor goalie play, substitutions/injuries, and any other number of insider factors. Play people from games with these higher totals and you’re likely to have more DFS success.
One thing that information pertaining to the Vegas odds can do is lead you to the teams that are likely to put up big goal numbers but not necessarily the actual players. In that case, feel free to stack multiple guys from the top line of that team.
Stacking doesn’t limit your chances by only picking players from one team. Instead it floods the market on the best opportunities for points. In fact, you can double up on a single goal if your C assists to your LW for the goal (as long as you’re not playing the opposing goalie as well!).
One of the great things about Daily Fantasy NHL, baseball, and basketball is that there are so many chances during a single week to play. Multiple nightly games increase the excitement but it’s also important to pay attention to just how many teams are in action.
For example, when there are only a few games on in a night it could be your defensemen and random points that end up deciding the games. When multiple teams are in action, the high scorers are going to be the players to focus on. It doesn’t make sense now – but it will after a week or two of playing.
These are the basic strategies that will give you an introduction to Daily Fantasy NHL. When fine-tuning your skills it’s best to play in low cash or even free games until you determine whether your strategies and ‘gut instincts’ are better geared towards head to head or 50/50 games or the guaranteed prize pool tournaments that pay out the big bucks.
