Nothing makes an MMA fight even more exciting quite like putting some money down on the action. Taking that thrill to even the next level is the somewhat-new Daily Fantasy Sports MMA contests. Instead of your night making or breaking on an out-of-nowhere choke hold, in DFS MMA you draft a stable of fighters that all fight to defend your honor…or at least your wallet.
Some things to know off the bat about DFS MMA is that, first of all, it’s very similar to NFL football. Not necessarily in the effect that players are tackling and huddling with each other but that all the DFS football and MMA players are focused on single weekly events compared to nightly NHL, NBA, or MLB games. This means the competition is fierce, but also that the prize pools can reach spectacular numbers.
The basics of Daily Fantasy Sports in team games such as baseball or basketball are pretty easy to comprehend: build your “superteam” and try to beat your competition while staying under the salary cap for the day.
Daily Fantasy MMA also builds on that team aspect. You select five fighters from a single event and have a salary cap of $50,000 to build that arsenal from. Each one of your fighters gains points both from events that happen during the fight as well as the final results.
The easiest thing to do when selecting your stable of fighters for the night is finding those who are supposed to win. Big favorites are obviously going to cost a bigger portion of your salary but picking the winner of the fight is the best way for the novice player to get accustomed to the ins and outs of DFS MMA.
Of course there’s much more to the Daily Fantasy MMA scoring than solely picking the winner of the fight. In fact, it’s not just if he or she wins, but how they win that will determine the amount of points that are accumulated. Not only that, DFS MMA points are accumulated throughout the fight rounds as well – your score will go up and down just as if it was being evaluated by the judges.
Finding a winner is great but knowing a fighter will lead you to your best DFS MMA success. That’s because of all the different types of points that are scored during a round. “Ground and Pounders” will earn you points for each Takedown (TD) as well as each Significant Strike (SS). Mat technicians can counter that with Reversals (REV) while all fighters are awarded for Knockdowns (KD) and Advances (ADVC).
You can really accumulate points within a round depending on your fighter’s aggression but it’s the results that actually really do pay the bills. The earlier your fighter wins, the better, as you can gain up to 100 points for a 1st round victory. Your fighter’s points will compile at the end of every round, then once again at the conclusion of the match.
So now that you know how points are calculated, what is the most sound strategy for filling out your fighter team? Of course that depends on who is fighting, but here are some things to look for:
– One of your best ways to get MMA DFS points is by simply winning the match, usually because this means your fighter landed some significant strikes and takedowns in the process. Obviously then the fighters with the best chances of winning are the ones with the highest sportsbook moneyline odds. You likely can’t take all favorites as it will bust your fighter salary cap, but it’s a good place to start.
– OK, so technically you should go for the winner any time you can. If your running low on salary cap however look for people who are at least going to go down with a fight. What this means is somebody is landing 60-80 significant strikes in a loss, it’s basically equal to the points that would have been gained in a 4th or 5th round win.
– It’s the same strategy that applies in DFS MLB – do you go for the mega-points from the home run bomber or do you take the safe base-hitter for the guaranteed points? In MMA a 1st round TKO is mega-points but it’s also kind of hard to predict. Then again, patient ground artists who wait 4-5 rounds for their opponent to make a mistake can be frustrating and actually cost you points, even in a win.
Daily Fantasy MMA is still a relatively new concept which is why very few people have truly mastered it yet – which is a good thing. The number one strategy would be to have fun selecting fighters you can root for. When that gets old and you want to win some money, find a stable of grapplers that will earn you points on the way to earning the win. Of course, finding who those guys and gals are is half the fun.
