The ICC Champions Trophy was an annual cricket Twenty20 competition. It was an international tournament that was launched in 2008. Some of the most successful domestic teams from major cricketing nations were participating in the round-robin and knockout tournament.

Cricket Australia, BCCI, and Cricket South Africa owned the competition and N. Srinivasan was the chairman. The ICC Champions Trophy was running for a period of two to three weeks between September and October in India or South Africa.

The competition featured a total prize pool of US$6 million and a prize of $2.5 million for the winning team which is the highest prize for a club cricket tournament in history. Even though the competition was canceled in 2014, it featured some incredibly entertaining matches and some remarkable records.

Champions League Twenty20 rising in popularity

The competition is based on the Twenty20 cricket format. Twenty20 is a short format of the game and was introduced to the world in 2003 for the inter-country competition. A Twenty20 cricket match usually lasts roughly about three hours and each inning lasts approximately 90 minutes. Each team has a single innings and these innings are restricted to a maximum of 20 overs.

Nowadays, Twenty20 are extremely popular all across the globe. Moreover, there are also multiple Twenty20 matches on international tours and domestic cups. The new format also attracts a younger audience and helped cricket increasing its viewership.

 

 

Five years after Twenty20 cricket was invented, the Champions League was launched. Due to the large success of the IPL, cricket authorities in India, Australia, and South Africa decided to create a new international club competition.

In October 2008 the first edition took place, even though there were problems due to the fact that the BCCI decided to bar players from the Indian Cricket League. England had several ICL players in many of their teams, however, the ECB eventually agreed to the terms of the BCCI.

Soon after, the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa founded the Champions League Twenty20 with one team from England.

Champions League Twenty20 Format and Teams

The Champions League Twenty20 featured some of the largest prizes in cricket history. The winner of the competition would go on to win $2.5 million and there were $6 million in total on the line. While the tournament winner would take home a large chunk of the prize pool, the runners-up would still take home $1.3 million.

Nowadays though the Indian Premier League is paying out the highest money for the first prize: US$3 million.

Since 2010 the competition distributed the money as follows:

• $2.5 Million – Tournament Winners
• $1.3 Million – Runners-up
• $500,000 – 2nd and 3rd Runners-up
• $200,000 – Teams eliminated in the group stage

 

Prior to the start of the competition, every team had to name a team of 15 players. The teams were required to have all players contracted for their domestic tournament. Similar to the Indian Premier League, each team could have four international players. Even though most other tournaments had stricter rules for both occasions, the Champions League stuck to these rules.

However, there was an exception in 2011. The Mumbai Indians had several players on their team who were unavailable and were allowed to field five international players. Subsequently, the team won that year’s edition of the competition.

Teams from the participating top cricketing nations were determined by the premier Twenty20 tournaments of these nations. There were teams from India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, the West Indies, and Sri Lanka in every single edition of the competition.

England participated in three editions, however, they decided to withdraw from the competition due to the domestic season clashing with the tournament dates. Due to the fact that the tournament has been mainly targeted at the Indian audience, there were multiple teams from India in each edition of the competition.

Since 2011 there were four teams from India while other countries had a maximum of two teams. India was also the first choice for hosting the tournament. To include more overseas players and stronger competition, the West Indies created the Caribbean Twenty20.

Venue

When the tournament was created, the founders intended to rotate the venue of the tournament between the three shareholders. However, the broadcasting agreement required India to host at least five of the first ten tournaments.

 

 

South Africa hosted the competition in 2010 but India hosted all subsequent tournaments. Australia has not hosted an edition yet due to the bad weather conditions in September and the undesirable time zone for broadcasters.

Records

Until 2012, 30 teams have played in 103 matches and there have been four players who scored centuries. 16 Players have taken four wickets in an innings and there were three players who managed to take five wickets in an innings. Only one player has taken a hat-trick in the competition.

 

 

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the most successful teams of the competition. Both Indian teams secured two titles each and qualified five times for the tournament. Two teams from Australia have also won the competition once: the Sydney Sixers and the New South Wales Blues.
